Muscat: Heavy rains continued in Oman on Monday, leading to significant casualties and disruptions in several regions of the country. Official sources have confirmed the deaths of at least 19 people, with the toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

Reports from official sources indicate that 16 people lost their lives in North Al Sharqiyah, while three fatalities were recorded in the Wilayat of Adam. Among the deceased are 12 children and one woman from Samad Al Shan in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi. Thousands were rescued by search and rescue teams across affected areas.

Analysis by the National Multi-Hazards Early Warning Centre suggests that the current weather conditions in Oman will peak on Tuesday. Meteorologist Aisha Jumaa Al Qasmi forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rains in several governorates, with the third wave of depression expected to bring significant impacts.

The Omani government has taken proactive measures in response to the adverse weather conditions to ensure the safety of the citizens. Work is suspended for employees in certain governorates, while classes are cancelled in most regions except Dhofar and Al Wusta.

Search and rescue teams, including the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority and the Royal Oman Police, are actively involved in rescuing stranded individuals. In Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, over 1,200 people were evacuated from a school as water levels rose. The Royal Oman Police conducted airlift operations to rescue individuals stranded in wadis.

The Civil Aviation Authority issued advisories urging caution during thunderstorms and flash floods. Residents are advised to avoid crossing wadis and low-lying areas, as well as venturing into the sea during the alert period. The medical response sector has affirmed its readiness to deal with the situation, ensuring sustained services and epidemic preparedness.

The heavy rains in Oman have resulted in tragic losses and widespread disruptions. However, the government and various agencies are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact and ensure the safety of all citizens.
