Kuwait’s Public Authority of Civil Aviation has submitted a second official complaint to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) over what it described as repeated Iranian attacks targeting the country’s airspace and Kuwait International Airport.

In a statement, the authority said the protest letter described the attacks as a serious violation of international treaties and conventions governing civil aviation and warned that they posed a direct threat to passengers, airlines, airport staff and critical airport infrastructure.

The authority said the latest attack, which struck Terminal 1 last Wednesday, resulted in fatalities, serious injuries and extensive material damage.

It added that the incident forced the suspension of air traffic operations and the temporary halt of flights to and from Kuwait International Airport, disrupting air transport services and passenger movement.

According to the authority, the attack occurred just 48 hours after Terminal 1 had reopened and Arab and foreign airlines had resumed operations following repair and rehabilitation works carried out after an earlier attack on the airport on February 28.

The authority said Kuwait had invested significant efforts in restoring the airport and resuming normal air navigation operations before the latest incident took place.

In its complaint, Kuwait called on ICAO to take urgent and decisive measures to protect civil airspace and aviation facilities, prevent similar incidents and hold those responsible accountable in line with international law and global aviation safety standards.

The authority also reaffirmed that Kuwait reserves all rights under international law to take appropriate measures to protect its sovereignty, security, airspace and civil facilities, while ensuring the safety of passengers, employees and infrastructure linked to Kuwait International Airport.
