Haitham bin Tariq Al Said was sworn in as the ruler of Oman last year

Oman to appoint crown prince for the first time ever. The royal decree amending the constitution regarding the appointment was issued on Monday.

The ruler of Oman Sultan Haitham bin Tariq has issued two supreme decrees, the first by issuing the statute of the state, and the second by issuing the Law of the Council of Oman, as reported by the Omani News Agency (ONA) on Monday.

Monday's announcement set the terms of the transfer of power in the country along with the appointment of the crown prince. However, it did not specify who the crown prince would be or what responsibilities he would have.

The issuance of Decree No. 6/2021 disseminates a new Basic Law of the State which will "set up a specific and stable mechanism for the transfer of power in the sultanate," according to ONA.

Under the new order, basic education is mandatory for all citizens of the country and will be given more rights and freedom. Gender equality and the welfare of children and disabled persons are also guaranteed by the Basic Law.

Haitham bin Tariq Al Said was sworn in as the ruler of Oman last year, succeeding his cousin Sultan Qaboos who has died at age 79. There was no crown prince in Oman during the reign of late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
