Kerala monsoon lottery: 11 female sanitation workers strike gold with Rs 10 crore
text_fieldsMalappuram: 11 female sanitation workers from Parappanangadi have won a staggering Rs 10 crore in the monsoon bumper lottery. Each of them is expected to receive around Rs 63.6 lakh after taxes.
These dedicated workers, part of the Haritha Karma Sena under the Parappanangadi Corporation, pooled their resources to buy a lottery ticket for Rs 250, a small sum that turned out to be their ticket to a life-changing fortune.
Radha, one of the sanitation workers, initiated the idea of buying a lottery ticket that promised a grand cash prize of Rs 10 crore. However, not all women could afford the amount individually. They collectively raised the money by contributing varying sums. Nine of them pitched in Rs 25 each, while two others managed to contribute Rs 12.50 each. To make it happen, some even borrowed the required funds, reported The News Minute.
Their persistence paid off when they received an unexpected call on July 27, Thursday. The elated group had clinched the first prize in the lottery draw.
Remarkably, this isn't the first time the group of women has tried their luck with a lottery ticket. In a previous instance, they won Rs 1000 in the Onam bumper lottery.
Two of the women, Kuttymalu and Baby, who each contributed Rs 12.5, share a heartwarming bond. As relatives, they support each other in times of need. While Kuttymalu lent Rs 25 to Baby for the ticket, the latter has plans to repay her as soon as she receives her wages. Such unity and mutual care have been the hallmark of their friendship.
Despite winning the life-changing amount, the women remain committed to their duties as sanitation workers, vowing to continue making Parappanangadi one of the cleanest municipalities in Malappuram. For them, the lottery win won't deter their dedication to their work; instead, they hope it inspires others in the community to achieve their dreams.
Their winning spirits remain grounded, recognising that each person faces unique struggles. Some have recently experienced personal tragedies, while others are dealing with house renovations or recovering from illnesses.
A Usman, the Chairman of Parappanangadi Municipality, acknowledges the worthiness of these women to win the lottery. He commends their relentless efforts in keeping the town clean and describes them as a hardworking and dedicated team. Their determination to continue their work even after their big win is a testament to their commitment to their community.
