Weighted vests gain popularity as study links them to better weight maintenance

A growing fitness trend centred on weighted vests is drawing attention after new research suggested the gear may help with long-term weight maintenance, especially among older adults.

The study focused on older adults with obesity who followed a calorie-restricted diet.

While both groups in the study lost similar amounts of weight initially, those who wore weighted vests for up to 10 hours a day during the weight loss phase showed significantly better outcomes over time. After two years, participants using vests regained only about half of the lost weight, compared to those who regained almost all of it without using the gear.

Researchers attribute this difference to metabolism. Weight loss typically slows the body’s resting metabolic rate, making it easier to regain weight. However, the study found that this metabolic slowdown was much smaller among those who wore weighted vests.

One explanation being explored is the “gravitostat” theory, a concept suggesting the body senses weight through bones and adjusts appetite and fat storage accordingly. By replacing lost body weight with external load, weighted vests may help the body maintain its previous energy balance and reduce weight regain.

Beyond weight management, weighted vests may also support fitness by increasing muscle engagement, improving balance, and enhancing cardiovascular effort during everyday activities like walking or climbing stairs. They can also help maintain muscle and bone strength during weight loss.

The trend is gaining traction due to its simplicity, allowing users to add resistance during routine activities rather than structured workouts. It is particularly appealing to older adults, busy individuals, and those trying to maintain weight loss.

However, experts caution that weighted vests are not a substitute for exercise and diet. Improper use, such as carrying too much weight, may strain joints or increase the risk of injury. They are also not suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with back or heart conditions.
