846 of the 1706 sanctioned teaching posts are lying vacant in the Delhi University.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that over 40 per cent of sanctioned teaching positions across 14 central universities are lying vacant, with two of them having 70 per cent vacancy.

As per the data, an overall 33.4 per cent of teaching positions and 37.7 per cent of non-teaching sanctioned positions in central universities were lying vacant as of April 1.

"Arising of vacancies and filling up is a continuous process. The data with regard to posts lying vacant for more than three years, as on date, is not maintained, centrally," Pradhan said.

Of the 18,911 sanctioned teaching positions in 45 central universities, over 6000 are vacant. The Delhi University has the highest number of vacancies, followed by the University of Allahabad. While 846 of the sanctioned 1706 posts are lying vacant in Delhi University, 598 of 863 teaching posts are vacant in the University of Allahabad. Over 50 per cent or 23 of 44 universities have more than 30 per cent vacancies, and just three universities have less than 20 per cent vacancies.

For all 45 central universities across the country, 33.4 per cent of sanctioned teaching posts are lying vacant as of April 1, 2021, the data revealed. In the case of non-teaching posts, about 37.7 per cent or over 13,700 positions are left vacant of the available 36,351 non-teaching positions.
