The body of self-styled spiritual guru Gopan Swami was found to be in a sitting position, covered with ash, after being exhumed on Thursday by the police, following the Kerala High Court's dismissal of the family’s plea against breaking the so-called Samadhi.

Local revenue and police officers, along with forensic surgeons, were present during the exhumation found on the premises of Gopan’s house near Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram. After conducting an inquest, the body was taken to the government medical college hospital for postmortem to determine the cause of death.

This development came after the Kerala High Court dismissed a petition filed by Gopan’s family, which sought to prevent the police from recovering the body for an autopsy. The family had claimed that Gopan had entered a state of samadhi, a meditative consciousness, and had lowered himself into a tomb he had built five years ago.

However, the court rejected the family's argument, as they could not produce a death certificate or explain how Gopan had died. Initially, the police had registered a missing person case, but suspicions were raised after the family posted banners in the region claiming that Gopan had attained samadhi.

The family, including Gopan’s wife and sons, had vehemently opposed the exhumation, citing religious reasons. They argued that the police action was an affront to their faith, with some even seeking support from various Hindu organisations. Despite their resistance, the court ruled in favour of the police's investigation.

Gopan, 69, was a former headload worker who later became a spiritual guru. His sudden disappearance and the family’s refusal to disclose details about his death raised questions among local residents, prompting the police to intervene. Authorities are now working to uncover the cause of death, as suspicions surrounding the case continue to grow.
