Washington: Sameerah Munshi, the only Muslim member of the White House Religious Liberty Commission, has resigned from her position, citing strong objections to the policies of the administration led by former US President Donald Trump.

Munshi stepped down two weeks after the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, she said her decision was driven by concerns over what she described as injustice and atrocities linked to the administration’s actions both within the United States and abroad.

She strongly criticised the military action against Iran, arguing that the operation had been carried out without proper constitutional authority or approval from the US Congress. Munshi also alleged that the strikes had resulted in civilian casualties, including children, and claimed the military action was undertaken in support of Israel.

Her resignation also came amid controversy within the commission. Munshi cited the removal of fellow member Carrie Prejean Boller in February as another factor influencing her decision. Boller was removed after being accused by commission chair Dan Patrick of attempting to disrupt a hearing on antisemitism by promoting a personal political agenda.

Munshi said she initially joined the commission to represent the concerns of ordinary Americans and believed the United States provided strong protections for religious freedom. However, she later concluded that the commission was influenced by hidden political motives rather than a genuine commitment to safeguarding religious liberty.
