Kerala Eid-e-Milad rally’s salute to Hindu temple wins hearts online
text_fieldsKasaragod: A video of Muslim youths saluting a Hindu temple during a recent Eid-e-Milad rally in Kerala’s northernmost district of Kasaragod has gone viral on social media, drawing praise as a powerful symbol of religious harmony in the state.
The viral Instagram reel shows volunteers in uniform marching through a road, halting briefly to offer a salute to the shrine. The rally was organised by the Kottikulam Noorul Huda Madrassa at Palakunnu, and the temple where the gesture was made was the Palakunnu Kazhakam Bhagavathy Temple. Eid-e-Milad marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.
Anishith K, a local youth who captured the moment on his phone, posted the video on Instagram on Saturday. “I never expected the video would go viral,” he said on Tuesday. “I was sitting at my father’s shop opposite the temple when the rally passed by. I had goosebumps seeing the participants saluting the shrine, so I shot the visuals on my phone.” His post was captioned: “This is Kerala. Kerala’s unity in diversity – Muslims saluting a Hindu temple on Nabi Dinam, showing respect and harmony between religions.”
The video has since been viewed nearly 25 lakh times.
One of the rally organisers said the practice of offering a salute to the temple has been followed for the past 10 years. “This time it became viral through the video. There were 47 participants, including children. Several people have called and texted us after seeing it,” he said, adding that participants extend similar gestures of respect at other religious institutions along the rally route as well.
A large number of social media users praised the gesture, describing it as an inspiring example of the religious coexistence and unity that Kerala is known for.
