Malappuram: In a significant political development ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, former Left-backed Independent MLA Karat Razack on Sunday rejoined the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), ending his association with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

The IUML is a key constituent of the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Razack, who had previously represented the Koduvally constituency, met IUML state president Sayed Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal at his residence in Malappuram, where he was formally readmitted into the party.

Speaking to reporters, Razack said his return to the IUML was unconditional and not driven by any personal demands. He cited a growing disconnect within the LDF, alleging that the Left Front had failed to adequately accommodate leaders like him.

Expressing dissatisfaction with his experience in the LDF, Razack said he felt sidelined and described the lack of engagement from the leadership as disappointing, which ultimately led to his decision to return to the IUML.

“I decided to come back to the IUML last night. I will function in the party with double strength to bridge the gap of the 10 years I spent away from the organisation,” he said.

With the support of the Left, Razack had won the Koduvally Assembly seat in 2016, defeating the IUML candidate by a narrow margin of 573 votes. However, in the 2021 Assembly elections, he lost the seat to IUML leader M K Muneer by a margin of 6,344 votes.

Razack currently serves as the chairman of the Madrasa Welfare Fund Board.
