Eid message in Kerala: Spreading compassion against hate of ‘Kerala Story’

The sermons held as part of the Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan fasting on Wednesday in Kerala, called upon the faithful to spread the Islamic value of compassion and fraternity in society while castigating the screening of the controversial film 'Kerala Story' as an attempt to create division based on lies and hate in the name of love.

Across the state, faithful adherents spanning all age groups congregated in mosques to offer morning prayers, while specially arranged Eidgahs experienced a significant turnout of devotees.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan offered prayers at the Beemapally Masjid for prayers, while prominent political figures, including Lok Sabha candidates Shashi Tharoor and Pannian Raveendran, participated in the Eidgah held at Palayam Juma Masjid.

Post-prayer gatherings were marked by embraces and exchanges of pleasantries among attendees, with traditional feasts featuring a plethora of ethnic delicacies prepared in Muslim households.

However, amidst the joyous occasion, religious leaders seized the opportunity to caution against perceived attempts to sow discord within society. Imam VP Suhaib Maulavi, addressing worshippers at Palayam Juma Masjid in Thiruvananthapuram, voiced concerns over the screening of the contentious movie 'The Kerala Story' and its alleged role in fostering division.

Maulavi asserted that such cinematic endeavours propagate baseless narratives, urging against unwitting participation in agendas aimed at disseminating falsehoods. He emphasized the role of art in promoting harmony and cautioned against its misuse as a tool for incitement.

Hussain Madavoor, a prominent Islamic scholar, echoed similar sentiments during his sermon, rebuffing the notion of "love jihad" purported in the Bollywood film. Directed by Sudipto Sen, 'The Kerala Story' depicts the ordeal of Kerala women coerced into conversion and recruitment by ISIS, sparking controversy since its release last year.

The movie's recent screening by public broadcaster Doordarshan reignited the debate, drawing sharp reactions across political spectrums in Kerala. Religious leaders' condemnation follows the Idukki Diocese's screening of the film as part of a contentious youth training program, which ignited widespread outcry.

As Eid festivities drew to a close, the underlying message from religious leaders resonated: vigilance against attempts to foment division, and a steadfast commitment to fostering compassion, fraternity, and social harmony.

Amidst the celebrations, Kerala's Muslim community remains resolute in safeguarding the spirit of unity and resilience against divisive forces.
