Snakebite suspected: teachers rush student 60 km to hospital

Thodupuzha: The teachers of the government LP school at Sastampara near here rushed a fourth grader 60 km away to hospital Tuesday morning, suspecting snakebite.
When 3 year-old Pranav complained of snakebite returning from toilet at 11: 30, Arshad Muhammad and other teachers of the school carried the student off to primary health centre 3km away.
The boy was then taken to district government hospital in Thodupuzha. Meanwhile, they took onboard the student’s grandma on the way.
At the district hospital, the boy was given first aid but doctors couldn’t confirm snake bite. Even if snakebite was confirmed, the hospital had no ICU facility to administer antivenin.
Thus the student was referred to the children’s hospital in Kottayam, where doctors concluded that the wound was not from snakebite. But the student is still under observation, say the hospital authorities.
