Alternative secular govt after polls: Yechuri

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM would take steps to form an alternative secular government at centre no matter whatever be the situation emerging after the polls, says Sitaram Yechuri. That is what India is looking forward to, CPM general secretary said in an interview with Asianet.
In 2004, people in Kerala were aware of the fact that the Left would support the Congress-led government; still, LDF won 18 out of 20 seats. People chose to empower the left to steer the government in forming people-friendly policies.
In 2004, Congress failed to send to the parliament even a single MP, still the Congress formed the government at the centre. That led to implementing several progressive policies.
Not individuals but policies matter, Yechuri said when asked about his party’s campaigning against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad.
The Left had opposed economic policies of Manmohan Singh during his stint as the finance minister. But when he became the PM, the Left bolstered the government from outside. Personality wouldn’t matter but policies do.
It is just a matter of conjecture whether CPM would support the government formed by Congress. Let’s see what the situation would be like. Let the people decide first, he added.
Pre-poll alliance at national level wouldn’t be feasible, which is an Indian reality. This had been the reality in 1977, 1998 and 2014.
In 2019 also, a secular alternative would emerge after the polls, Yechuri said.
