Northeast monsoon hits Kerala; Heavy rains expected

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meterological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains till Saturday in many parts of the state.

More rainfall is expected to occur by November 8. The northeast monsoon hit the Tamil Nadu coast, southern part of Kerala, Puducherry and the western coast of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. It advanced to the northern part of Kerala on Friday.

Heavy rains followed by thunder and lightning are expected in the coming days.

A low pressure formed in the southern Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify by Tuesday. Due to this, Kerala is likely receive more rain by November 8.

The northeast monsoon extends from October 1 to December 31 in Kerala. It was delayed this year due to the cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal. Though the rain normally received in the month of October is usually 292.4 mm in Kerala, this year it was 306.1 mm.
