12 medical colleges in the state barred from accepting MBBS students

New Delhi: Citing deficiency of required resources in Medical Colleges, the central government has barred 82 colleges, including 12 medical colleges in Kerala from taking students for medical courses.
According to a Health Ministry order, the government has rejected the proposals of 68 new medical colleges on the recommendation of Medical Council of India (MCI). Of these 68 medical colleges, 31 were government-run and 37 were private.
According to senior officials, MCI recommended to reject the proposal of 68 new medical colleges as its inspection team found that the colleges in question were lacking necessary facilities for MBBS course. In most of the colleges, there was not only the lack of necessary equipment though, the colleges seeking permission were short of teachers too.
As the government barred 82 colleges, including 68 new colleges, from taking new students for medical courses, the prospects of medical students, who have cleared this year's NEET exam, may suffer as the decision has reduced 8,150 seats.
The government's move which barred 12 colleges in Kerala has resulted in at least 1600 fewer medical seats being available to MBBS applicants from the state in 2018.
