Thiruvananthapuram: As incessant rain pounded upon the state, number of people died in rain related accidents has climbed to 12. Four people have gone missing.

Collectors in Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Tuesday. Kozhikode district collector has announced holiday for educational institutions in four taluks of the district.

Major rivers and waterbodies are overflowing, flooding houses and roads.

A senior official from Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that 111 relief camps were opened in the state. As many as 27,031 persons belonging to 6,065 families have been shifted to these camps.

Revenue minister E Chandrasekharan said that property worth Rs 8 crore have been damaged due to rains.

As vehicular traffic was stalled, people were stranded in several places. Eight passenger trains were cancelled on Monday and some others ran late for several hours along the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram route. Buses to Karnataka via Wayanad district had been suspended.

The Met department has predicted more rain till Friday. The coastal districts are on high alert and fishermen have been asked not to venture in rough seas.

Putting District Collectors on alert, the Chief Minister has directed them to prevent the spread of epidemics and keep hospitals equipped for emergencies.
