State govt has the right to ban plastic bags: HC
text_fieldsKochi: The High Court on Wednesday said that the State government has the power to ban plastic carry bags.
While responding to the state government's contention that it doesn't have the power to order a ban on plastic carry bags, a division bench of the court said as per the notification issued by the Central government, the state governments have the right to do anything in public interest to protect the environment.
The bench led by the Chief Justice also directed the government to file a new affidavit by January 22 explaining its stance on introducing a ban on plastic carry bags.
The court’s directions came while considering a petition filed by S Seetharaman, secretary of Aluva-based All Kerala River Protection Council, demanding a complete ban on manufacture, import, storage, and use of all kinds of plastic bags.
