Thiruvanthapuram: Kerala government is set to challenge in Supreme Court the Kerala High Court’s decision to set up a three-member panel in Sabarimala to oversee the on-going annual festival at the shrine.

The state may well file the appeal next week engaging a senior lawyer, reports say. The government will highlight at the SC the sovereign right of the executive to govern Sabarimala, drawing on a clear distinction between roles of executive and judiciary.

Earlier, High Court had set up a panel having two retired high judges ( PR Raman and S Siri Jagan), and DGP( A Hemachandran), bestowing what reports say ‘ sweeping powers’ as well as asking the panel to periodically report to HC on the conduct of the festival.

Meanwhile sources choosing anonymity said that the HC’s intervention resulted from the government’s improper presenting of the case.
