State Govt to take over Pariyaram Medical College
text_fieldsThe CPM-led government in Kerala on Wednesday decided to take over the Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur.
The state cabinet which met here, with the meeting presided over by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan resolved to recommend the promulgation of an ordinance by the Governor for the takeover of the institution. The meeting also ratified the draft Bill for the takeover.
The Academy of Medical Science, popularly known as Pariyaram Medical College, is the first self-financing professional institution in the state under the co-operative sector.
The Pariyaram Medical College Society had requested the government to take over the institution after it found itself difficult to carry on the administration. The previous LDF regime in 1997 had taken over the medical college but the subsequent UDF government returned the administration to the society.
The government has shouldered the burden of repaying the loan taken by the society for the medical college and hospital.
Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said the takeover was aimed at providing quality health care to the citizens in north Kerala. A press note quoting her said the medical college with 1,938 employees and 2,500 students would be an asset for the health sector in the State.
One of the best super specialty hospitals in India, it has 1000 beds and 18 operation theatres as well as a dental college, pharmacy college, college of nursing, institute of paramedical sciences, Hridayalaya and public school within the premises.
