Eminent poet Prabha Varma chosen for Padma Prabha Puraskaram
text_fieldsWayanad: Eminent poet, lyricist and journalist Prabha Varma has been selected for the Padma Prabha Puraskaram this year.
The announcement was made by the chairman-cum-managing director of 'Mathrubhumi' daily, M P Veerendra Kumar, MP, at a press conference at Kalpetta in the district Sunday.
A jury headed by ace novelist M Mukundan chose Varma for the prestigious award, considering his contribution to Malayalam literature, he said.
The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 75,000, a plaque and a citation, was instituted by the Padma Prabha Memorial Trust, he said.
Veerendra Kumar, a Rajya Sabha member, served thrice as Press Trust of India (PTI) chairman and is at present a director in the premier news agency.
The award was instituted by Kalpetta-based Padma Prabha Memorial Trust in memory of M K Padmaprabha, a leading socialist and one of the founders of modern Wayanad.
Varma is the winner of Kendriya Sahitya Academi, Kerala Sahitya Academi and Vayalar awards, Mahakavi Puraskaram, Mahakavi Pandalam Keralavarma Kavitha Puraskaram and Vallothol award, besides many other recognitions.
His major works include 'Chandananaazhi','Kalaprayaaga', 'Avicharithram' and 'Manjinotu Veyil Enna Poleyum'.
He had also won the state government's best film lyricist awards in 2006 and in 2013.
