New Delhi: The CPI-M Thursday welcomed the appointment of a Dalit priest to a temple in Kerala and lauded the communist government in the state for ensuring social justice by putting an end to caste discrimination.

"This is a major step taken to ensure that Brahmanical considerations are replaced with anti-caste democratic approaches to ensure that all Hindu believers get their due share in priestly functions", the Left party said, hailing the decision as a historic and bold step.

22-year-old Yedu Krishnan, Kerala's first Dalit priest, recently took charge at the Shiva temple at Valanjavattom in Pathanamthitta district.

Under the supervision of the states Left Democratic Front government, the Travancore Devaswom Recruitment Board (TDRB) decided to appoint six Dalits as priests along with 30 other non-Brahmin priests. The Board manages more than 1200 temples and functions.
