Kozhikode: As many as 32 passengers were injured after a private bus rammed into the boundary wall of a private land at Meppayur near Koyilandy on Friday.

According to the police, the accident occured around 10.15 am when the bus which was heading towards Vatakara rammed into the wall and overturned near Meppayur High School. Tie rod end failure is suspected to have been the cause of the accident.

“When the tie rod end fails, the drivers lose steering control of the vehicle,” said Payyoli Circle Inspector Dinesh Koroth.

The condition of one passenger- Kunjiraman Nambiar, 70, a resident of Chenoli near Perambra- is said to be critical. Five others who suffered grievous injuries are undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

Police said others sustained minor injuries and were discharged from hospital after being administered first aid.

A case has been registered under Section 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.

The crash blocked the traffic in the area for almost an hour. Traffic was restored only after the officials from Perambra fire station removed the vehicle from the spot.
