Thiruvananthapuram: The century-old Pazhassi Kovilakam in Kannur district, the heritage mansion where the descendants of legendary king Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja lived, will be taken over by the state government soon.

Pazhassi Raja was an erstwhile ruler who fought against the British in Malabar region during the 18th century.

A meeting, chaired by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Thursday decided in principle to take over the ancestral home and adjacent properties as the protected monument of the state archaeology department.

The chief minister directed officials concerned to go ahead with necessary proceedings in this regard, an official release said here.

The decision was taken based on the recommendations of civic authorities at Mattannur in Kannur, where the building is located.

Besides the chief minister, state minister for ports, archaeology and archives Kadannappally Ramachandran, minister for cultural affairs A K Balan and Pazhassi royal family members also took part in the meeting, the release added.
