Thiruvananthapuram: Even though the Kerala government declared a holiday on Tuesday in government and educational institutions after the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha, banks were functioning normally, albeit on a quiet note.

An official posted at the State Bank of India branch in the state capital, told IANS that while Monday was as usual a busy working day due to preceding Sunday weekoff, things were quiet on Tuesday.

"Even though all conditions with regard to withdrawals from banks and ATMs remain, today (Tuesday) is relatively an easy day at our branch," said the official who did not wish to be identified.

As Tuesday was a state holiday, daily reports on daily disbursal of pensions and salaries through the state treasuries were also not available.

Busy highlighting the public woes after the November 8 demonetisation, a dozen-odd Malayalam TV channels in Kerala were now relaying news on the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The TV channels began to cover Jayalalithaa ever since she suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday afternoon, shifting the focus from the hardships faced by the common people at banks and ATMs in the state.
