Police officer accidentally shoots himself dead

Kochi: A police officer shot himself accidentally with his own service gun in Kochi in the early hours of Sunday.

Sabu Mathew, an Assistant Commandant at the Armed Reserve Camp in Thrippunithura, was on night patrol with a colleague and a police driver when the incident took place at around 1.45 am. He was on the back seat of the police vehicle when the pistol reportedly went off.

Although he was taken to Ernakulam Medical Centre after the incident, he was declared brought dead.
