Palakkad: A police patrol party was fired upon by Maoists here on Saturday, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said.
Chennithala said the shootout occurred in the forest area of Attapadi, adding it was a five-member gang of Maoists which opened fire first.
"It was after that the police retaliated. More details cannot be divulged due to security reasons," the minister told the media.
Marykutty, the Palakkad district collector, said no Kerala Police official was injured in the incident.
"Additional police forces have been sent and combing operations intensified in the forest," said Marykutty.
Police also recovered posters and publicity material of the Maoists from the area where the firing took place.
