Madurai: Two women from Kerala were killed and a man was seriously injured when a lorry rammed into their car near here Wednesday, police said.

The victims, hailing from Peermedu Upputhurai in Idukki District, were on their way to fireworks hub of Sivakasi for buying crackers for sale in the shop run by their family when the mishap occurred near Kallikudi Police Station, 30 km from here, they said.

The deceased were identified as Jhansi (25), wife of Micahel, who was driving the car, and his sister Jasmine (23).

Michael applied brake to avoid hitting a motorcyclist who suddenly crossed the road and the lorry coming behind rammed into the car.

The condition of Michael was stated to be serious, police said adding lorry driver Palanisamy had been arrested.
