Bar owners to move Supreme Court against HC ruling
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The bar owners in the state will file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court ruling approving of the government’s plan to shut down all the bars after Onam, the first step towards achieving a complete “dry state”.
Senior advocates, Harish Salve or Kapil Sibal would fight the case on behalf of the bar owners. They claimed that the government’s decision to close down all the bars citing poor infrastructure and allowing only the five star bars, was discriminatory and not justifiable.
The High Court Division bench comprising of Justices B Radhakrishnan and P B Suresh Kumar, had earlier ruled that it would not intervene in the government decisions and policies if the rule was made into law. The Court had also pointed out that the government had issued legal notices to the bar owners directing them to close down all the 312 bars with September 12 as the time limit.
The government’s new liquor policy spearheaded by Sudheeran was passed into law recently and aim to make Kerala a liquor free state in the coming years.
