New Delhi: UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has spoken over phone with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday in the wake of reports that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought asylum in the UK, NDTV reported.

Acknowledging the talk, EAM S Jaishankar stated on X: "Received a call from UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy today. Discussed the situation in Bangladesh and West Asia."

The talk gathers importance considering the situation in Bangladesh following the resignation of Hasina government.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during weekly briefing that the two leaders discussed the developments in Bangladesh and West Asia.

Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 and came to India after trying to quell days of fierce protests unleashed by students.

Started off with a demand to end the quota system for government jobs, the protests soon evolved into broader political move against the government.

It is not clear how long Hasina will continue in Delhi, before moving to another location reportedly in UK or the US.

On Wednesday, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Sheikh Hasina, said his mother has made no decision on the country of her choice for asylum, adding that it all "rumours," The Daily Star reported.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy added that the former Prime Minister will be staying in Delhi for a while.

‘These are all rumours. She has not made a decision on that yet. She is going to stay in Delhi for a little while,’ he was quoted as saying.

"Sheikh Hasina is well and now in Delhi. My sister is with her. My sister lives in Delhi... She is well, but very upset," he added.

An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has sworn in last evening.
