Supreme Court scraps uniform assessment for class 12 exams
cancel

New Delhi: The Supreme Court ordered on Thursday that the uniform scheme for assessment for all state boards in India is not acceptable. The top court was hearing a plea seeking to cancel class 12 exams.

Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari pointed out that each state board is different and autonomous. The bench also cited it as the reason for not issuing an order to scrap examination for class 12. New assessment policies suggested by the CBSE and CISCE for allocating marks were also dismissed.

The petition challenged the decision made by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) to cancel the board examinations due to the ongoing second wave of Covid-19.

Earlier this week, CBSE had told the top court that it will conduct optional board exams for students who are not satisfied with their assessment. The affidavit also stated that the results will be declared by July end. The board had decided to conduct exams for main subjects alone and the marks obtained were to be treated as final.

Some parents had opposed the cancellation of the board examination. A plea suggesting that the exams could be conducted as the pandemic is under control. Several petitions had been filed on the same matter. The bench asked all states to make their stand clear by Tuesday.
