Sergio Gor takes charge as US Ambassador to India, signals fresh push on trade talks
text_fieldsSergio Gor on Monday took charge as the United States Ambassador to India, describing the bilateral relationship as the most consequential global partnership of this century and signalling renewed momentum in trade negotiations.
Speaking shortly after assuming office, Gor said trade negotiators from both countries will hold their next call on Tuesday.
He said the United States remains determined to conclude a trade deal with India, while continuing cooperation across areas such as security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.
Referring to recent remarks by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick accusing India of slowing negotiations, Gor said differences between partners are natural. “The United States and India are bound not just by shared interest, but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences,” he said.
Gor also announced that India will be invited next month to join Pax Silica, a US-led coalition focused on building a secure silicon and critical minerals supply chain. Countries already part of the initiative include Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel.
The ambassador said he arrived in India late Friday night and formally took charge on Monday. He said he came with deep respect for the country and a mission to take the partnership forward. Recalling his first visit to India in 2013, Gor said the experience left a lasting impression.
He added that he met President Donald Trump last week and discussed Trump’s 2020 visit to India and his friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gor said he hopes President Trump will visit India again within the next year or two.
