Resolve fertiliser shortage in Tamil Nadu, says CM Stalin to PM Modi
text_fieldsTamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately ensure the supply of fertilisers to the state, warning that farmers could face a severe shortage during the critical Kharif season.
In his letter, Stalin called for urgent steps to address the current shortfall and requested additional allocations to support increased cultivation this year.
The Chief Minister highlighted that fertiliser manufacturers have supplied only around 57% of the allocation made by the Union Government between April and August 2025. This has resulted in shortages of 27,823 metric tonnes (MT) of Urea, 15,831 MT of DAP, 12,422 MT of MOP, and 98,623 MT of NPK Complex fertilisers.
Stalin cautioned that if the supply gap is not addressed promptly, farmers’ chances of securing a good harvest could be at risk.
He further explained that the early onset of the monsoon and sufficient storage in major reservoirs have allowed farmers to significantly expand paddy cultivation. By September, paddy coverage had risen to 5.66 lakh hectares, a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. With production prospects looking better than usual, the demand for fertilisers has sharply surged.
To meet this rising demand, the Chief Minister requested an additional allotment for September: 40,000 MT of Urea, 20,000 MT of DAP, 20,000 MT of MOP, and 40,000 MT of NPK Complex fertilisers. He urged the Centre to issue immediate instructions to fertiliser manufacturers to supply both the pending shortfall and the new requirement, ensuring that farmers in Tamil Nadu are not left in distress during the ongoing Kharif and the upcoming Rabi seasons.
