Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a pair of new shoes to a man who met him barefoot, in fulfilment of a vow he had taken 14 years ago—that he would not wear shoes until Narendra Modi became Prime Minister and met him in person—prompting Modi, who cherished the love, to urge people to engage instead in social work and nation building

Rampal Kashyap, a resident of Haryana’s Kaithal, made the unique vow and fulfilled his wish after meeting Prime Minister Modi during a public event in Yamunanagar. Modi was present there to lay the foundation stone of the 800-megawatt Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant and to inaugurate several other development projects in Haryana, and the event was also attended by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

In the video footage of the meeting, which was shared on the Prime Minister’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts and has since garnered over seven million views, Modi is seen assisting Kashyap in wearing the shoes.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister tweeted about the incident and said that Kashyap’s dedication humbled him, but he also used the occasion to urge supporters to direct their sentiments towards causes that contribute to society and nation building.

While Modi expressed gratitude for the affection shown through such vows, he also advised that the energy and faith behind them could be channelled into social work, and he appealed to others to focus their devotion on initiatives that benefit the nation as a whole.
