New Delhi: The RBI and SBI notifications permitting the exchange of newly banned Rs 2000 notes without identity proof have been challenged in Delhi High Court.

The plea said the notifications are arbitrary and offend Article 14. It also sought the banks to ensure that the notes are deposited in respective bank accounts only so that people who have black money and disproportionate assets can be identified.

The PIL is filed by BJP leader and Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay. It has RBI, SBI, and Union Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance as respondents. It also asked the high court to direct the Centre to take action in the matter.

"Recently, it was announced by the Centre that every family has an Aadhaar Card and Bank Account. Therefore, why is the RBI permitting to exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes without obtaining identity proof? It is also necessary to state that 80 crore BPL families receive free grains. It means 80 crore Indians rarely use Rs 2,000 banknotes. Therefore, the petitioner also seeks direction to RBI and SBI to take steps to ensure that Rs 2000 banknotes are deposited in bank accounts only," said the plea.
