Guwahati: Assam and the entire northeastern states went ahead in the path of peace and development in the past eight years when BJP came to power in the Centre with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.

He claimed that 70 years of Congress's regime in the Centre sent the region to violence and anarchy, but Modi helped the region to join the mainstream. He was inaugurating the new party office in Guwahati, PTI reported.

According to Shah's claims, the BJP government brought peace to Assam and led 9,000 people to lay down arms. Modi has tripled the budget for the northeast, ushering in infrastructural developments in all sectors, the Union minister said.

Later, on the new party office, he said, "BJP offices are not buildings of brick and mortar alone but reflect the dedication, emotion, commitment and hard work of party workers".

Shah and BJP president J P Nadda together inaugurated the new headquarters of the party in the state. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state party head Bhabesh Kalita, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and others were also present.

The office building was named after BJP Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Later Nadda virtually laid the foundation stone for nine district party offices in the state. Shah did the same for 102 BJP regional offices in Assam.
