New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the trial proceedings in a money laundering case registered against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a plea filed by Soren seeking quashing of the case.

In his petition before the apex court, Soren also challenged the repeated summons issued to him by the ED in connection with the matter.

Soren has contested the recent decision of the Jharkhand High Court, which declined to quash the case against him.

On January 15, the High Court refused to set aside the cognisance taken against Soren by a special MP-MLA court in a complaint filed by the ED, dealing a setback to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader.

The ED had initiated the complaint case against Soren for allegedly failing to appear before the agency despite multiple summonses issued in connection with his suspected involvement in a land scam.
