Mithun Chakraborty faces FIR over alleged hate speech at BJP event
cancel

Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has filed an FIR against actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty based on a complaint alleging that he made a provocative statement at a party meeting in Kolkata last month.

The statement was made during an organisational meeting of the BJP in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. According to police sources, a complaint was filed on Monday evening at Bowbazar Police Station in central Kolkata by an individual, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons. The complainant accused Chakraborty of making statements that could incite violence and tension.

The incident in question occurred on October 27, when Chakraborty addressed the gathering and commented on a controversial statement made by Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir regarding the population ratio in Murshidabad district. Chakraborty, targeting Kabir, said, "One leader is claiming that in a particular district, there are 70 per cent Muslims against 30 per cent Hindus. He also said that the latter will be cut and thrown in the Bhagirathi river. Surprisingly, the Chief Minister did not tell him anything. A day will come when I will busy you in your own soil."

This comment drew criticism, and the Election Commission had previously censured Kabir, issuing a show-cause notice for his remarks. Kabir later claimed that his words were taken out of context to make it appear as a threat.

Following the complaint, Kolkata Police registered an FIR against Chakraborty. However, it remains unclear what further legal action will be taken in the matter.
