Abu Dhabi: AED1,000 fine,10 black points for ignoring school bus stop signs

Motorists in Abu Dhabi have been warned to stop when a school bus displays its side-mounted “STOP” sign or face an AED1,000 fine and 10 traffic black points.

Abu Dhabi Police said drivers must bring their vehicles to a complete halt and remain at least five metres away from the bus.

The rule applies when the stop arm is extended while a school bus is transporting pupils.

The extended sign indicates that children may be boarding or leaving the bus and could need to cross the road.

Maintaining the required distance gives pupils enough space to move safely without passing close to other vehicles.

Abu Dhabi Police said ignoring the sign puts children at risk during one of the most vulnerable stages of their school journey.

The force called on drivers to remain alert near schools and whenever approaching a school bus.

It said protecting pupils is a responsibility shared by all road users.

Motorists were also reminded to follow traffic rules intended to provide children with a safe environment when traveling to and from school.
