M Ravichandran appointed as new Secretary of Earth Science Ministry
text_fieldsM Ravichandran, Director of National Centre of Polar and Ocean Research, Ministry of Earth Science, has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Earth Science Ministry.
"The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. M. Ravichandran, Director, National Centre of Polar and Ocean Research, Ministry of earth Science, Goa to the post of Secretary, Ministry of Earth Science," the central government notified.
In November 2016, Ravichandran was appointed Director of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (ESSO-NCPOR) in Goa. He was responsible for the overall execution and implementation of Polar Science activities of India and Geoscientific exploration of non-living resources and surveys. As the Director for National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), he was responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing India's Antarctic Programme.
He was elected Vice President of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research), the apex body and the unifying umbrella for initiating and coordinating high quality international scientific research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. It provides independent scientific advice to Antarctic Treaty Consultative meetings and organisations. Ravichandran was chosen by 32 voting national and International Science Unions for a four-year term.
