Food wastage poses a significant challenge for India’s food service industry, impacting restaurant profits and aggravating environmental concerns while millions worldwide face malnutrition.

A recent report highlights the potential of technology to mitigate food waste and promote sustainable practices in the sector.

Parthasaradhi Reddy Bokkala, Lead Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, emphasized that difficulties in predicting customer demand often compel restaurants to overproduce, leading to wastage. Smaller restaurants, in particular, struggle due to limited resources and lack of experience, making it harder to secure cost-effective and waste-reducing services.

The report points to technology as a crucial solution, suggesting that its adoption can help streamline operations, optimize purchasing decisions, and minimize waste. It highlights initiatives such as Zomato’s Food Rescue program, designed to help restaurants reduce food waste.

Similarly, features like the order scheduling option on platforms like Swiggy and Zomato allow customers to schedule orders in advance, enabling restaurants to better plan their kitchens and minimize excess production.

While larger restaurant chains are more equipped to implement technological solutions, smaller establishments face financial barriers. However, Reddy noted that efforts by online food delivery platforms could assist small businesses in overcoming these challenges, enabling them to invest in waste-reducing technologies, reported IANS.

Although these innovations are still in their early stages, they hold significant potential to revolutionize waste management practices in the food service industry, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
