Karnataka runs pilot test for integrated emergency service helpline

Karnataka implemented the new Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), 112, and ran pilot tests in three districts, Haveri, Davanagere and Bagalkote. The ERSS is an integrated emergency helpline that provides access to all emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) via one number.

The project began in Karnataka in November 2019 and is now being implemented. The intention is to create a quick and efficient method to avail emergency services. CM Yediyurappa said, "A single number - 112 - will integrate all other helpline numbers with it. This will be helpful for preventing crimes and during emergencies. It can be used for any emergency including police, fire, ambulance, traffic issues, and disasters."

According to Haveri Superintendent of Police KG Devaraj, all the emergency signals that are received through the newly set up ERSS will be handled via a public safety answering point set up in Bengaluru. It will receive the distress signals and automatically redirect them to the concerned agency.

ERSS keeps a real-time digital map which will enable the agency to know which vehicle is appropriately situated to go and offer aid. According to S Ravi, IGP Eastern Range, Davanagere, "The ERSS will help people who are in distress. Our special staff will reach them within 15-17 minutes at their doorstep."
