Karnataka police bust sex racket thriving on superstition: sex with virgin girls cures mental illnesses

Mysuru: The Mysuru city police on Sunday arrested a woman and her husband for running a sex racket that allegedly exploited minor girls for prostitution, The Indian Express reported.

A court here issued an order sending the accused Shobha, a Bengaluru resident, and her accomplice Tulsi Kumar to judicial custody.

Acting in collaboration with the NGO Odanadi Seva Samsthe, police enticed the duo in a trap in Mysuru

It is now revealed that they allegedly collected Rs 20 lakh in exchange for arranging sex with minor girls.

The racket operated on superstition that having intercourse with virgin girls could cure various mental illness.

The racket’s activities came out after Odanadi received tip off about Shobha seeking clients with the superstitious beliefs of curing mental illness through sex with minor girls.

The NGO alerted police after discovering that a 12-13-year-old girl was displayed in WhatsApp videos to potential customers.

An NGO staffer posing as a customer approached Shobha to bring the minor to Mysure; Shobha promised to arrive by 2 m Saturday.

Odanadi founders K V Stanley and M L Parashurama and the Vijayanagar police set a trap near the Government Girls’ Children’s Home in Vijayanagar.

Shobha arrived at the location with the girl as her companion was watchfully keeping distance.

As Odanadi team met Shobha and began negotiations, police surrounded the area.

Shobha demanded Rs 20 lakh and claimed the girl was her daughter, then her niece, before changing again that she was an adopted daughter.

Shobha admitted to her involvement in the sex racket and then man accompanying her turned out to be her husband, Tulsi Kumar.

The police took the girl, a Class 6 student, into protective custody and placed her in a children’s home alongside investigating her background.

The Vijayanagar police registered a case and are investigating how Shobha came into contact with her.
