Justin Trudeau stuck in Delhi as flight develops technical issues
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister is stuck in the national capital with his entourage after his aircraft suffered technical issues on Sunday night.
It is not known when the team including government staff and journalists accompanying him will be able to leave the country.
Justin Trudeau was to leave on Sunday night after attending the G20, where he faced a criticism from Indian government.
‘These issues are not fixable overnight, our delegation will be staying in India until alternate arrangements are made,’ Bloomberg quoted Trudeau's office as saying.
During a sideline conversation between two leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Canada for allegedly allowing Sikh secessionist groups to operate in the country, according to Bloomberg.
India's Foreign Ministry said that PM Modi expressed ‘strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada’.
‘The nexus of such forces with organized crime, drug syndicates and human trafficking should be a concern for Canada as well,’ the ministry was quoted as saying.
Relations between the two countries have been tense recently following Sikh separatist groups ramped up anti-India protests in Canada.
Most recently, the groups organized a referendum asking the community in Canada whether places where Sikhs live in India be independent.
In June the extremists groups held protest outside India’s High Commission in Ottawa, which India called as an ‘attack’.
Following a probe into foreign interference in its polls, Canada’s national security adviser Jody Thomas said ‘India is a major source of foreign meddling in Canada’.
‘Obviously Canada will always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, peaceful protest. That's something that's extremely important to us. At the same time as we are always there to prevent violence, to push back against hatred,’ Trudeau told media in New Delhi.
