Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin lauded the victory of the United Left Panel in the student elections at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), viewing it as a blow to right-wing forces.

Stalin emphasized that the outcome signifies the rejection of the BJP by the people of India in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The United Left coalition, comprising All India Students Association (AISA), Democratic Students Federation (DSF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and All India Students’ Federation (AISF), clinched three out of four central panel positions, including the president, vice president, and joint secretary in the recent JNUSU election held on March 22.

Dhananjay secured victory as the president, Avijit Ghosh as the vice president, and Mohammad Sajid as the joint secretary. Notably, Dhananjay's win marked the first time a Dalit president has been elected to JNUSU since Batti Lal Bairwa in 1996-97.

Stalin conveyed his congratulations on social media platform X, commending the United Left Panel for their triumph despite facing obstructionist tactics from ABVP, including the disqualification of Left candidate Swati Singh at the last minute.

Swati Singh, vying for the post of general secretary, was disqualified following a complaint by ABVP regarding an incident in 2023. In response to this, the Left extended support to Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA)’s candidate Priyanshi Arya, who secured a landslide victory against ABVP candidate Arjun Anand.

Acknowledging Stalin's support, Swati Singh emphasized the collective resistance against the ideology of RSS-BJP, aiming to safeguard democratic institutions and uphold dissenting voices.

The outcome of the JNU student polls has been viewed as a significant political indicator, reflecting broader sentiments and potential shifts in the upcoming national elections.
