India and Jordan share a common and clear stance against terrorism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday after meeting King Abdullah II in Amman, as the two leaders agreed to further deepen bilateral cooperation across key strategic and economic sectors.

Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Jordan on a two-day visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II, was warmly received at the Husseiniya Palace, where the two leaders held one-on-one talks followed by delegation-level discussions.

The visit comes as India and Jordan mark 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Both sides reaffirmed their united stand against terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation, and agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence and security, counter-terrorism, trade and investment, fertilisers and agriculture, renewable energy, tourism, and people-to-people ties.

“We hope that peace and stability will prevail in the region. We share a common and clear stance against terrorism. Under your leadership, Jordan has sent a strong and strategic message to the world against terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation,” PM Modi said, reaffirming India’s support for efforts aimed at achieving durable peace in the region.

King Abdullah II expressed strong support for India’s fight against terrorism and condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. PM Modi praised the Jordanian monarch’s leadership in countering extremism and his “active and positive role” on the Gaza issue.

Recalling their long association, Modi noted that their first meeting took place in 2015 on the sidelines of the UN at an event focused on countering violent extremism, and highlighted King Abdullah’s consistent emphasis on moderation and dialogue.

The two leaders agreed to expand economic engagement, with PM Modi proposing to raise bilateral trade from the current $2.8 billion to $5 billion over the next five years. India is Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. Modi also suggested collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment system and India’s UPI.

Several memorandums of understanding were signed in areas including culture, renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure, and a twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora, aimed at boosting bilateral ties.

Welcoming PM Modi, King Abdullah II said the visit reflected decades of friendship, mutual respect, and productive cooperation. “Your visit provides an important opportunity to chart new paths of economic cooperation and advance prosperity for our people,” he said.

PM Modi invited King Abdullah II to visit India, an invitation the Jordanian king accepted.

Later, in a post on X, Modi described the discussions as “productive” and shared an eight-point vision to deepen ties, covering trade, agriculture, IT, healthcare, infrastructure, critical minerals, civil nuclear cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.

King Abdullah II hosted a banquet in honour of PM Modi following the talks. On Tuesday, the two leaders will address an India–Jordan business event, and Modi is also scheduled to visit the historic city of Petra along with the Crown Prince, subject to weather conditions.

Jordan, a key supplier of phosphates and potash to India, is home to over 17,500 Indians working across sectors such as textiles, construction, and manufacturing.

Jordan is the first leg of PM Modi’s four-day, three-nation tour, which will also include visits to Ethiopia and Oman.
