Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala agriculture minister PP Thankachan dies
text_fieldsSenior Congress leader and former Kerala Agriculture Minister PP Thankachan passed away on Thursday in Aluva.
He was undergoing treatment for age-related health issues and died at around 4.30 pm.
Thankachan was a prominent leader in Kerala’s political landscape. He served as the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 1991 to 1995. He later joined the A. K. Antony-led government as Agriculture Minister from May 1995 to May 1996.
For 13 years, Thankachan was the convenor of the United Democratic Front (UDF), where he helped coordinate activities among the alliance’s various parties. He was known for his diplomatic approach and for uniting different political voices. His leadership earned respect across party lines.
Thankachan also served as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He was elected four times to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Perumbavoor constituency, serving between 1982 and 1996.
His passing marks the loss of a key political figure who contributed significantly to Kerala’s governance and political cooperation.
