Engage with citizens, be proactive on social media: Centre to Governors

New Delhi: The Centre has directed Governors to be more proactive on social media, touch with the public alongside sharing their views especially on difference of opinion between the Centre and states on policy, The Indian Express reported.

This comes at a time when several Governors are in conflict with their state governments, often leading to controversies.

Notably, the suggestion comes ahead of the two-day Conference of Governors beginning August 2 set to be presided over by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Another suggestion reportedly seeks to improve coordination between various Central agencies and organisations in the state ‘so that they don’t work in silos’, according to the report.

Ensuring cooperation between organisations could help Raj Bhavan ‘make a difference’ in areas including generation of jobs, education, skilling, services and growth, according to the suggestion.

The Centre suggested Governors to engage directly with citizens including reaching out to schools and hospitals, holding open forums and discussions with community leaders.

Meanwhile, the President’s Secretariat in an official statement said that Governors of all States will attend the Conference, the first to be presided over by the President.

The Vice President, the Prime Minister, and Union Ministers of Home Affairs are among others to be present alongside many other ministers and senior officials.

The conference comes month after the Supreme Court said that “Governors also cannot be oblivious to the fact that they are not elected representatives of the people.”
