Ahmedabad: Gujarat University in Ahmedabad asked students from Bangladesh not to leave the city without informing authorities alongside avoid reacting to rumours and social media posts, The Indian Express reported.

The university, which is one of the oldest in the state, issued the advisory in the wake of chaos in the neighbouring country with former PM Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India.

It is reported that a meeting was held with nearly 25 students from Bangladesh enrolled at the university and affiliated colleges under the Government of India’s Indian Council for Cultural Relations scholarship.

“Looking at the situation, we met the students and have issued an advisory to them. We have assured them that we are with them and they do not need to panic,” Dr Neerja Gupta, the Gujarat University Vice Chancellor told Indian Express.

The meeting was chaired by Dr Neerja Gupta and Nilam Panchal, director of the Study Abroad Programme (SAP).

Alongside requiring permission to leave the city, the students have to give an emergency number to the university.

It is reported that the University has set up two 24×7 emergency helpline numbers for the students to contact authorities anytime.

There are around 300 international students under Gujarat University’s SAP enrolled for the ICCR scholarship. Most of them are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, and countries in Africa, according to the report.
