Don't interfere in Karnataka's affairs: Shivakumar hits back at Pinarayi over 'bulldozer' remark
text_fieldsBengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday took strong exception to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s comments on evictions in Bengaluru, advising the senior leader not to interfere in the neighbouring state's internal affairs.
The verbal sparring was triggered by Vijayan's reported statement comparing the Karnataka government's actions to the "bulldozer model" of Uttar Pradesh, alleging that Muslims were being targeted for eviction in Bengaluru.
Dismissing the remarks as "political gimmicks" ahead of elections, Shivakumar said, " Without knowing the facts, Mr Pinarayi should not interfere in our state's affairs. These are political gimmicks ahead of elections. Those evicted with valid documents and those belonging to Karnataka will certainly be helped."
Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, defended the eviction drive, stating that the location in question was a quarry pit notified 10 years ago for garbage dumping. He described the area as dangerous with serious health hazards, alleging that huts had "come up overnight" due to illegal encroachment.
"We know Bengaluru well and do not want land mafia to create slums. We are protecting government land," he asserted.
Explicitly denying the use of bulldozers, Shivakumar claimed the administration had merely vacated a public space in the heart of the city. He assured that residents with valid documents and those belonging to Karnataka would be assisted. "Those who are eligible will be rehabilitated," he said, noting that housing is being provided under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme.
