Chennai: As a large controversy is burning following a statement by the IIT Madras director V Kamakoti that cow urine has medicinal properties, a 2023 report warning by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) is becoming relevant.
The institute warned that the urine of cows and buffaloes is not suitable for human consumption as it contains 14 kinds of harmful bacteria, including Escherichia coli bacterium, commonly associated with stomach infections in humans. The peer-reviewed study, led by Bhoj Raj Singh along with three PhD students, has been published on the online research website Researchgate.
The footage of Kamakoti talking about the medicinal properties of cow urine has now gone viral on social media.
Kamakoti claimed that cow urine has the capability to destroy bacteria and fungi. He claimed that it could cure bowel diseases in humans, and he had an experience when his father was diagnosed with fever; cow urine cured it in 15 minutes.
The statements by the IIT Madras, a prestigious educational institution in the country, the director has stocked severe backlash from many quarters. Congress and DMK slammed Kamakoti. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram wrote on X that peddling pseudoscience is most unbecoming of the director.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai defended Kamakoti. He said that the director, “who is a very decorated person, who is an expert in AI, quantum computing,” chose to follow his dharma and pray to god in his own way. It is just a group of student unions politicizing the matter.
